Mediterranean Sea at centre of Pope’s warning against ‘sea of despair’

Pope Leo XIV has placed the Mediterranean at the heart of a powerful appeal, describing it and the Sahara Desert as crucial geographic and spiritual crossroads that embody both history and the future. Speaking during a visit to Algiers, the pontiff warned against allowing these regions to become “cemeteries where even hope dies”, highlighting the human tragedies unfolding across migration routes.

His message focused on the deeper causes behind suffering, urging governments and societies not to limit their response to immediate crises but to address the roots of despair. He called for concrete action to create “oases of peace”, tackle instability and provide real alternatives for those driven to risk dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean.

In one of his strongest statements, the Pope condemned those who profit from human suffering, denouncing illicit gains made through exploitation and trafficking. He stressed that human dignity must remain inviolable, leaving no room for ambiguity in his criticism.

The remarks amount to a broader call for collective responsibility, challenging institutions and communities to transform areas marked by conflict and migration into spaces of hope and opportunity, particularly across the Mediterranean basin.
