Merkel, Zelenskyy and Wałęsa among first laureates of European Order of Merit

European Parliament Roberta Metsola has announced the first laureates of the newly established European Order of Merit, a distinction recognising individuals who have made a significant contribution to European integration and the promotion of European values.

“Europe has always been built by people… This European commitment deserves to be celebrated,” Metsola said while unveiling the inaugural list of recipients.

Among those appointed Distinguished Members are Angela Merkel, Lech Wałęsa and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ten other figures were named Honourable Members, including Mary Robinson, Maia Sandu and Jean‑Claude Trichet.

A further group of prominent individuals were appointed Members of the Order, among them chef and humanitarian José Andrés, basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo, human rights lawyer Oleksandra Matviichuk, and the members of U2.

The award was established by the European Parliament last year to mark the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. It is the first civilian honour granted by an EU institution, with up to 20 laureates to be appointed each year.
