Metsola calls for renewal of EU-US relationship

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has called for a renewal of the Transatlantic alliance, describing it as essential to safeguarding peace, prosperity and democratic resilience in a world facing increasing uncertainty.

Addressing students at Georgetown University in Washington DC, Metsola said this was “the time to double down on our way — to rekindle the power of the Transatlantic alliance to be a force for positive change in people’s lives, for peace and prosperity.”

She praised Georgetown’s 236-year tradition of nurturing leaders committed to public service, calling the institution “a global icon of free-thinking.” Reflecting on her own formative years, Metsola said those experiences had instilled in her a “passion for change” and the conviction that “none of us are passive spectators.”

Recalling historic milestones such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 1989 Malta Summit, she reminded students that “you are never too small to matter.” That same spirit, she argued, is needed once again to confront the global challenges of the present era.

Metsola described Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a defining moment that reinforced Europe’s and America’s shared duty to defend freedom and democracy. “Our shared future relies on the strength of that Transatlantic relationship,” she said, describing cooperation between the two continents as “the test of our political generation.”

She warned that democracy could not be taken for granted, stressing that it must deliver tangible results to counter extremism and public disillusionment. “We need to be faster. We need to be better. And we need to do it together,” she urged.

Concluding, Metsola said the partnership between Europe and the United States must once again lead the world “as a force for peace, prosperity and progress, proving that our way can still be the guiding force this world needs.”
