President of Malta George Vella held a meeting with Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Antonio Vitorino.
After the exchange of greetings, the two sides discussed regional affairs, particularly the migration situation in the Mediterranean and the effects on the region caused by the ongoing political and military turmoil in Libya. Both sides agreed that migration requires global solutions.
President Vella reiterated the need to address the situation in Libya, particularly in view of the recent escalation in fighting around Tripoli. He highlighted that an escalation of violence would undoubtedly increase the humanitarian crisis. DG Vitorino agreed with the President and highlighted that IOM is currently facing the displacement of over 100,000 Libyans in Libya.
Turning their attention to migration, President Vella highlighted the importance of injecting tangible investment and development projects in Africa, whilst encouraging the EU to implement projects that facilitate the exchange of people between Europe and Africa, such as Erasmus+.
President Vella concluded the meeting by referring to the recent European Parliament elections and Brexit.
