More records broken across Europe in current heatwave

A dangerously intense heatwave across much of Europe continued to grip most of Western Europe with higher temperatures registered Thursday after already breaking records in several countries this week

On Wednesday, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands all recorded their all-time highest temperatures.

On Thursday, Paris has beat its all-time highest temperature after hitting 40.6C amid the heat wave sweeping Europe. This temperature registered in Paris broke the city’s all-time high temperature record of 40.4 C at Parc Montsouris, set more than 70 years ago. Temperatures will continue to rise a few more degrees the rest of the day.

French media say Wednesday night was “probably” the hottest-ever recorded in France.

Record-breaking temperatures are possible in several other major metropolitan areas including Brussels and Amsterdam on Thursday.

Today is the hottest day of the year so far in the UK after midday temperatures reached more than 35C as a quarter of trains faced being cancelled during the afternoon commute.

According to the Met Office, there is a 60 percent chance the mercury could rise above the current all-time UK temperature record of 38.5C on Thursday.
