NBA star Kobe Bryant and daughter die in a helicopter crash in California – Update

Kobe Bryant’s daughter died alongside her father in a helicopter crash in California, reports TMZ.

Gianna Maria, aka GiGi, was confirmed to be amongst the five victims of the crash which happened earlier today in Calabasas, an upscale neighbourhood near Los Angeles

TMZ reports they were travelling in the player’s private helicopter when it crashed in Calabasas on Sunday morning.

Kobe has famously used a helicopter to travel for years — dating back to when he played for the Lakers. He was known for commuting from Newport Beach, CA to the STAPLES Center in DTLA in his Sikorsky S-76 chopper.

Bryant played his entire, 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. He won five championships with the team and was named an All-Star on 18 occasions. He retired in 2016.

In 2018 he won an Oscar for best animated short for a film called Dear Basketball, based on a poem he wrote about his retirement from the game

KB is survived by his wife Vanessa, and their four daughters — Gianna, Natalia and Bianca and their newborn Capri.
