Nearly half of Maltese non-homeowners doubt they will ever buy property

Nearly half of Europeans who do not own their home believe they will either never be able to buy one or are simply not interested, according to the RE/MAX European Housing Trend Report 2025.

Across 23 countries, 44% of non-homeowners fall into this category, reflecting persistent affordability pressures.

Malta ranks among the highest in Europe. Around 49% of Maltese respondents who do not own their home say they are either unable or unwilling to purchase property, placing the country close to the top tier alongside Italy and just below Germany, Austria and Czechia. 34% of respondents in Malta said they believe they will never be able to buy a home, significantly above the European average of 29%.

The findings highlight growing concerns over housing affordability, particularly for younger generations. While homeownership remains strong overall in the EU — with nearly 70% owning their property — rising prices, slower income growth and tighter lending conditions are reshaping expectations. In Malta’s case, sustained property price growth appears to be dampening confidence among prospective buyers.
