Nearly quarter of million in bed with the flu in Italy

Over 247,000 people in Italy were affected with the flu during the week before the Christmas holidays.

The most affected regions are Valle d’Aosta, Lombardy, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Marche and Abruzzo.

This was revealed in data of the epidemiological surveillance bulletins Influnet and FluNews Italia, edited by the Istituto di Sanità (ISS).

There were six people with influenza that have been hospitalized in intensive care for acute respiratory infections and two of these have died.

In the week of December 16-22, according to ISS bulletins, the number of cases of influenza has increased, with a trend in the epidemic curve “similar to that of the last flu season”.

In Italy the total incidence is equal to 4 cases per thousand patients and the most affected are children under five years of age, in whom an incidence of up to 3 times higher is observed.
