Kirstjen Nielsen resigns as US Homeland Security chief

Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned from the post of as US Homeland Security chief.
President Trump tweeted she would be temporarily replaced by Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan.
Nielsen was responsible for implementing the proposed border wall and the separation of migrant families.
She gave no reason for her departure in her resignation letter, although she said this was “the right time for me to step aside” and said the US “is safer today than when I joined the Administration”.

Although she was originally set to vacate the position immediately, Nielsen later said in a Twitter post that she had agree to stay on through Wednesday, April 10 “to assist with an orderly transition and ensure that key DHS missions are not impacted.”
The announcement she is leaving her post comes days after the president visited the southern border.
