Newspapers’ Review – Thursday 31st May 2018

The Malta Business Weekly reports that the latest European Commission’s annual Justice Scoreboard show that while there is progress, the country is still lagging. The reports argues that government went overboard in praising the improvements registered. In another story, we read that the Polish crypto currency exchange BitBay is moving to Malta because it can’t open a bank account in Poland. The story is also reported on the front page of Orizzont.

L-Orizzont reports that Finance Minsiter Edward Scicluna, in an interview with the same paper said that the debt of the country kept decreasing. In fact he’s quoted saying that it went below the stated €85.8 million. The newspaper also carries a report quoting Maritime Environment expert Alan Deidun who said that the government should create a fund to assist the industry import alternative material to replace single-use plastic. The back page carries a story about the case of the Russian journalist, whose death was staged by Ukrainian police.

In-Nazzjon reports that the Artistic director of the V18 has given himself a contract of €300,000. In the report we read that Mario Philip Azzopardi has chosen his own play Ħabbilni ħa nirbaħ for a production of a film which will be funded from an organisation supported financially by the V18 foundation.

The Malta Independent reports that there was no agreement reached as yet over the price of White Rocks land. It also reports that Minister for Health Chris Fearne has signed an agreement with the World Health Organisation on technical help for 10-year in mental health sector. The Malta Independent’s backpage reports the statement given by the Church Commission about the former ITS site development, where it asked Hard Rock boss to tell the db Group to rethink Pembroke’s proposals.

This story is also given prominence on the front page of The Times. In another story The Times reports that the Environment Minister said that the new Comino master plan which focused on berthing arrangements at the Blue Lagoon, did not envision new development.
