Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage was hit by a milkshake on Monday, an assault which he blamed on Remainers who haven’t accepted the outcome of the U.K.’s referendum to leave the EU.
Farage was campaigning in the North East ahead of polling day on Thursday.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of common assault and remains in police custody.
BBC shares the following footage:
The suspect, identified as Paul Crowther, told reporters it was a salted caramel and banana milkshake and that he did not regret his actions.
This is not the first dairy-based beverage to meet its fate on the lapels of a right-wing politician in the run-up to this week’s European Parliament election. Protesters have also pelted figures such as Tommy Robinson and UKIP candidate Carl Benjamin, who is under investigation for making remarks about raping Labour MP Jess Phillips, with milkshakes and other food items in recent weeks.
