A 13-year-old boy has reportedly been arrested in connection with an explosion in central Oslo, close to a university campus and within 500 metres of the Israeli embassy.
Police confirmed that no injuries were reported at the scene, but said officers discovered a second explosive device. This was destroyed in a controlled detonation. Brian Skotnes, the officer in charge of the operation, told local media the device resembled a “military-style” hand grenade.
The blast prompted an unusual response from authorities, who issued an emergency alert directly to mobile phones in the area, warning residents about the incident.
“We’ve apprehended one suspect and are intensively seeking more information as well as other people,” Mr Skotnes said. “Our hypothesis is that it is criminals who have an agenda against other criminals, but we cannot rule out anything.”
Police officers have secured the area, which remains under investigation, and confirmed that the situation is now safe.
While declining to comment directly on the suspect’s age, Mr Skotnes emphasised that police are working to establish whether others may have been involved.
The incident follows reports of drone activity near Oslo and Copenhagen airports just a day earlier, adding to regional security concerns.
