In 1963 Soviet cosmonaut Valentina V. Tereshkova, the first woman to travel in space, returned to Earth in the spacecraft Vostok 6.

In 1978 the first Garfield comic strip by Jim Davis appeared in 41 newspapers on that day. It currently holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip.

In 1987 anETA car bomb kills 21 in Barcelona. The 1987 Hipercor bombing was one of the bloodiest attacks by Basque separatist organization, Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or ETA.

In 1991 Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar surrendered to police.

In 2014 Felipe VI became king of Spain after Juan Carlos I abdicates.
