Orban indicates Fidesz may leave the EPP

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban revealed that his ruling nationalist Fidesz party may drop out of the European People’s Party (EPP), the center-right grouping in the European Parliament.

In comments on the Hungarian national radio, Orban stated that he would prefer to reform the EPP but in the absence of that raised the prospect of Fidesz quitting the EPP.

Orban said that in the circumstances,  if need be something new can be started and the preferred ally would be Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party that is not a member of the EPP.

The EPP will be meeting on March 20 to discuss the matter.

This week EPP group leader Manfred Weber demanded Fidesz take down billboards attacking European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker which were part of its campaign ahead of European Parliament elections in May.

Fidesz reacted by saying that the posters would be replaced next week by others.
