Over 80 migrants rescued by AFM

An AFM patrol boat has rescued 87 migrants off the coast of Lampedusa and are on their way with them back to Malta.

The AFM said it was informed by Rome rescue centre on Monday evening after an Italian vessel operating under Frontex, the EU border control agency, was unable to provide any assistance due to technical faults.

The migrants were aboard a wooden boat South of Lampedusa.

This is the first major rescue of migrants by the AFM since 180 were picked up at the end of December.
