Parts of the UK see 1,000 lightning strikes in hour

Parts of the UK, mainly in the South East, were hit by torrential rain and thunderstorms. Some areas reported seeing 1,000 lightning strikes in the space of an hour.

The unsettled weather left roads flooded and homes without power in the South East of England, with parts of Kent seeing 42mm of rain in just 60 minutes.

Following the recent flooding in Lincolnshire, around 350 tonnes of sand and ballast were dropped in the area by RAF Chinook helicopters over the weekend.

Police said on Tuesday that almost 600 homes remained evacuated as the clean-up operation continued.

Other parts of the country will enjoy a brighter day on Wednesday, with sunshine expected in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
