UPDATED: Three people killed nine wounded after shooting on tram in Utrecht

Updated: The police, arrested the person suspected with the Utrecht killings.

Earlier, in comments about the developments in Utrecht, Dutch PM Mark Rutte did not repeat earlier comments by counter-terrorism authorities who suggested the shooting may have a terrorist motive.

“What’s known now is that there was shooting at people sitting in a tram in Utrecht, that there were wounded, and possibly deaths.”

Utrecht Mayor Jan van Zanen said that terrorism was the most plausible reason for the attack.

Earlier Utrecht Mayor Jan van Zanen  announced that nine people have been injured and at least three killed after a shooting on a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht.

Earlier Dutch police have issued a photo of the suspected attacker who was identified as Turkish born 37-year-old Gökman Tanis . For the time being police are speaking only about one attacker after reports indicated that there might have been more than one attacker.

 

In the tweet in which the photo was issued, the Dutch police wrote:

“The police ask you to look out for 37-year-old Gökman Tanis (born in Turkey) in connection with the incident this morning at # 24oktoberplein in Utrecht. Do not approach him yourself, but immediately call the tracking number 0800-6070.”

Earlier Dutch anti terrorism police have been dispatched to the Dutch city of Utrecht after a shooting incident in which initial reports indicate that a number of people have been injured.

The head of the Dutch counter-terror agency said there were shootings at “several” locations in the Dutch city of Utrecht on Monday, with police reporting at least one dead and several others wounded with shooter or shooters remain at large.

 

The Dutch authorities have raised the terrorism threat level to its highest point for the province of Utrecht.

In the meantime Dutch media is reporting schools in the city have been instructed by police to keep their doors closed.

Witnesses reported a man in a tram on the way to Utrecht CS pulling out a weapon and shooting several people but latest reports indicate that there might have been two attackers and still being sought by the Dutch police .

 

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he was “deeply concerned” and that an emergency response meeting had been convened.
