The US Pentagon announced that Iran’s Quds Force leader Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed on 03 January 2020 following a US airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport.

The attack comes amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington, days after alleged supporters of Iran-backed militias stormed the US embassy in Baghdad.

Meanwhile, the US is sending nearly 3,000 more army troops to the Middle East to be ready to quash reprisals expected in the region.

The State Department is urging American citizens to leave Iraq immediately, citing danger in the aftermath of a U.S. airstrike. American citizens were specifically warned to avoid the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, which had been besieged by Iranian-backed militias Thursday.
