Photo Story: India criminalizes Muslim instant divorce

Indian Muslim women show victory sign as they pose for a photograph during a gathering organized by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to celebrate passing a law outlawing instant divorce practice for Muslims, in New Delhi on the 31st July 2019.

Rajya Sabha, the Upper house of India’s Parliament on 30 July passed a bill outlawing the practice of instant triple talaq ‘Divorce in Islam’, with up to three years of jail term for the husband, five days after the law was approved by Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament).

The Muslim practice of triple talaq follows the rule where a husband can end a marriage unilaterally and instantly by repeating the word ‘talaq’, meaning ‘I divorce’, three times.
