Reading Time: < 1 minute

Residents carry branches of an oak tree which will be used as a yule logs, onto the hills above the village of Vrmdza, some 30 kilometres from the southern Serbian city of Nis, Serbia, 06 January 2020.

The Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates this day before Christmas in the Julian calendar with the head of a family cutting a yule tree and bringing it into the family’s home where it is placed during their dinner. After the meal the family burns the tree.

The traditional custom combines both, elements of Christianity and old Serbian pagan faith.
