Photo Story: The first Supermoon of 2020

The first supermoon of the year has appeared in the night sky this weekend.

A supermoon occurs when a full moon falls near or on perigee, which means the full moon coincides with the point in orbit in which the moon is closest to Earth.

As a result, the moon can appear to be up to 14% larger and 30% brighter during a supermoon, but it’s very hard to spot the difference.

This Supermoon will be the first of four supermoons in 2020, with three more expected for March, April and May.
