Photo story: The Heatwave across Europe

A handout photo made available by the European Space Agency (ESA) shows a map generated using the Copernicus Sentinel-3’s Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer of an extreme heatwave that hit Europe on 25 July 2019 (issued 26 July 2019).

High temperatures on 25 July 2019, reached as high as 39-40 degrees Celsius, with Netherlands, Belgium and Germany recording their highest ever temperatures. Paris reached a sweltering 41-degree Celsius, breaking its previous record in 1947.

This map represents the real temperature of the land surface as the satellite measures the real amount of energy radiating from Earth. Clouds in the image are visible in white while snow-covered areas are represented in light blue.
