Plane crash kills 14 in Colombia

A plane has crashed in central Colombia killing all people on board, authorities say. The pilot of the twin-engine propeller plane reported technical problems then lost contact and crashed south-east of the town of Villavicencio.

The BBC reports that aviation authorities said investigators were still trying to identify the dead.

Al Jazeera reported that fourteen people were killed in this plane crash which happened in the Colombian province of Meta, citing the country’s civil aviation agency has said.

The Douglas DC-3 aircraft, first built in the 1930s, can seat 30. The Laser Aereo plane was en route to Villavicencio from Taraira.

“Unfortunately… there were no survivors,” the agency said, adding that the wreckage was found close to Villavicencio.

President Ivan Duque paid tribute to the victims on Twitter. “My solidarity with the families,” he wrote. The aircraft’s navigability permissions were up-to-date, as were the medical certifications of its crew, the aviation agency said.
