Police Inquiry into Lord Mandelson: Details on Confidential Information

The Metropolitan Police has begun a criminal investigation into Peter Mandelson. He is a former Labour minister and ex-UK ambassador to the US. This follows allegations of misconduct in public office. The inquiry centres on claims that Lord Mandelson passed market-sensitive government information to US financier Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein is a convicted sex offender. This occurred during Mandelson’s tenure as business secretary under Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009.

Emails released by the US Department of Justice appear to show Lord Mandelson forwarding confidential details to Epstein. Lord Mandelson has not commented publicly. Sources indicate he denies any criminal wrongdoing. He insists he was not motivated by financial gain.

A government spokesperson confirmed readiness to assist the police. Parliamentary authorities have been notified of Lord Mandelson’s intention to resign from the House of Lords. The UK government referred the matter to Scotland Yard after reviewing emails allegedly sent by Lord Mandelson to Epstein.

An initial review by Downing Street found the documents contained “likely market sensitive information surrounding the 2008 financial crash”. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has provided police with correspondence. He called the alleged actions “inexcusable and unpatriotic”. This happened during a time of national crisis.

Commander Ella Marriott of the Met Police confirmed the investigation into a 72-year-old former government minister. She stated that all relevant information will be assessed as the inquiry progresses.
