In his Easter Urbi et Orbi address, Pope Francis prayed that the light of the Risen Christ shine in the darkness of conflicts around the world, especially those in Syria, Yemen, Israel and Palestine, Libya, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Sudan, South Sudan, eastern Ukraine, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.
Pope Francis expressed his closeness to the Sri Lankan Christian community and “to all the victims of such cruel violence. “I entrust to the Lord all those who are tragically gone and I pray for the wounded and all those who suffer because of this tragic event.”
A handout picture provided by the Holy See’s press office Vatican Media shows Pope Francis delivers the ‘Urbi et Orbi’ blessing at the end of the Easter Sunday mass in Saint Peter’s square at the Vatican City.
Urbi et Orbi denotes a papal address and apostolic blessing given to the city of Rome and to the entire world by the Roman pontiff on certain solemn occasions.
The Urbi et Orbi, which also offers a pardon for sins, is imparted from the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, usually at Easter, Christmas and after the election of a new pope.
With Easter, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The days leading up to it are for the Catholic Church punctuated by several solemn ceremonies.
