Possible ‘political’ solution for Italy’s impasse

cottarelliItalian interim prime minister Cottarelli said politicians, rather than technocrats like himself, might be able to steer the country out of deadlock.

This declaration has opened the door for a possible solution to the impasse in Italy’s quest to form a government.

ANSA reports that there are continuous contacts going on between Di Maio and Salvini on how there could be a political government. It seems that Di Maio has proposed to move Paolo Savona from Ministry of Finance to another Ministry.

These developments were referred also to by Prime Minister-designate Carlo Cottarelli said possibilities had emerged “for the birth of a political government,” and that financial market turmoil and other circumstances, “have caused me to wait for further developments”.

Reuters report that a source close to President Sergio Mattarella, who vetoed Savona as finance minister and appointed Cottarelli to form a government to oversee fresh elections around the end of the year, said the two men had “decided together not to rush things, (to favour) a possible political government.

Corriere della Sera reports that the proposal matured yesterday aimed at moving Savona to Foreign Affairs , to entrust Ministry of Finance to the former Deputy Director General of Bankitalia Ciocca, a personality linked to Ciampi and who boasts a strong network of relations in Brussels and Frankfurt.

The Corriere reports that the fact is that Salvini continues to resist this hypothesis of compromise, and he says he is ready to relaunch to build a “strong executive” still governed by M5S and Lega with the support of the Brothers of Italy. It is a way to escape the attempt to put an end to its movement, to avoid being placed at a crossroads: accepting a compromise on the political government team, or resigning to early elections in the middle of summer and not between September and October, which was (and remains) the goal of the Northern League leader.
