Italian President Sergio Mattarella is in stable condition and recovering well following a scheduled surgical procedure to implant a pacemaker, sources confirmed on Wednesday. The operation was performed without complications at Rome’s Santo Spirito Hospital on Tuesday evening.
According to official sources, the president underwent the procedure at approximately 8:00 p.m., following the completion of his daily institutional duties. He spent a restful night in the hospital’s cardiology ward and showed no adverse symptoms post-surgery. On Wednesday morning, the head of state was reportedly alert and reading newspapers on his iPad.
The Quirinale emphasized that the intervention had been planned in advance and was not related to any emergency, underscoring that there is no cause for concern regarding the president’s health.
Hospital sources indicated that patients undergoing similar procedures are typically discharged within 48 hours. While a discharge later on Wednesday remains a possibility, Thursday is considered the more likely timeframe for President Mattarella’s return home.
News of the president’s hospitalization prompted an outpouring of goodwill from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended her well wishes via social media, writing: “My warmest wishes to President Mattarella for a speedy and full recovery. Italy awaits you soon, with the same strength and dedication as always.”
President Mattarella, 82, has served as head of state since 2015 and was re-elected to a second term in 2022.
