North Korea has confirmed that leader Kim Jong-un has overseen a “strike drill” testing various missile components.
A number of short-range missiles were also fired from the Hodo peninsula into the Sea of Japan on Saturday.
North Korea’s leader gave the order of firing to increase the combat ability of the country, according to North Korean State media.
In its report on Sunday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Mr Kim had stressed the need to “defend the political sovereignty and economic self-sustenance” of the country in the face of threat and invasion.
It is believed that Saturday’s test is intended to increase pressure on Washington to move nuclear talks forward.
US President Donald Trump tweeted he believed Mr Kim would not jeopardise the path towards better relations.
Anything in this very interesting world is possible, but I believe that Kim Jong Un fully realizes the great economic potential of North Korea, & will do nothing to interfere or end it. He also knows that I am with him & does not want to break his promise to me. Deal will happen!
