Queen Elizabeth met with the Maltese President of Malta George Vella and his wife, Miriam Vella, during an audience at Buckingham Palace.
The British press remarked on how the Queen ditched her gloves as she carried out audiences at Buckingham Palace – but will be following Government advice on washing hands amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The 93-year-old monarch unusually wore large white gloves at a Palace investiture for what was believed to be the first time on Tuesday, as she greeted more than 50 recipients.
President George Vella told Queen Elizabeth II that meeting her was something he had “always dreamt about” when he was received by the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.
“It was something I always dreamt about, and at last it’s happened,” the president said. “We had met in the past on some occasions in Malta, but in a crowd, not like this. This is different,” he noted.
The Queen smiled and agreed. “Something special,” she said.
Private audiences last approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Only the opening remarks and exchange of greetings are made public.
