Queen Elizabeth to address the UK on Sunday

The Queen will address the nation about the coronavirus pandemic on Sunday, marking just the fourth time that she has recorded a special message.

Her Majesty, who has previously pledged that she and her family are “ready to play our part” in seeing the country through the COVID-19 crisis, will attempt to boost morale in a televised broadcast at 8pm.

The Telegraph reports that “aimed for what Palace aides and the Government hope will be the right moment to reassure and rally the country, it will go out to millions on television and radio at 8pm.”

The Queen, 93, recorded the address on Thursday at Windsor Castle, where she has been self-isolating with the Duke of Edinburgh, 98, since March 19.

In keeping with her role as “Mother of the Nation”, the great-grandmother is expected to expand on messages from the Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge by paying tribute to NHS staff and front-line workers, while reflecting on how the pandemic has affected her subjects in Britain and the Commonwealth.
