Quo Vadis Italia – Day 2 – Death threats to Mattarella evoke the memories of when his brother was killed in the 80s

Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini, used harsh tones, to call to popular mobilisation against the powers and the Europe of the banks, in defence of the right of Italian citizens to decide their own government.

However, there are differences between the two, on the proposed way-forward, in particular on the issue of the impeachment. The Five Stars announce, with Manlio Di Stefano, that they will present the request for impeachment as soon as possible. The Lega Nord, however, is biding time: “I – observes Salvini – I do things if I have concrete elements: at the moment I do not have them, I have to see, I have to study”.

5-Star Movement (M5S) leader Luigi Di Maio called for mass mobilisation in support of the party’s bid to impeach President Sergio Mattarella for sinking an M5S-League government bid. “I call the citizens to mobilise themselves. Make yourselves heard, it’s important that you do it right now. We will organise peaceful and symbolic demonstrations.” Di Maio said this while urging “everyone” to come to Rome for a big demo on June 2, national Republic Day. He said he had draped the Italian tricolour from M5S office windows and urged militants to do the same as a protest against Mattarella’s alleged flouting of the democratic will in rejecting anti-euro economist Paolo Savona as economy minister and sinking the M5S-League government bid.

Carlo Cottarelli , economist and who served as commissioner for the spending review appointed in 2013 by Enrico Letta, was commissioned by the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella , to form the new government .

Eariler, Cottarelli said “I will go to Parliament to present a budget law and in case of trust I will resign at the beginning of 2019, alternatively I will resign immediately to go to elections after August”.

Caretaker Democratic Party (PD) leader Maurizio Martina said that the centre-left group will back a confidence vote in a technocrat executive led by Carlo Cottarelli. He also blasted League leader Matteo Salvini for his criticism of President Sergio Mattarella following the collapse on an effort to form a League/5-Star Movement government. “The slogans of those who are purportedly on the side of the people against the elite are unacceptable,” said Martina. The former Democratic Party (PD) leader and ex-premier Matteo Renzi said the situation “it is a chance for the PD to make a comeback and also save the country…we must reach out, not remain closed, everyone’s commitment is needed…so that this strong Italy emerges victorious at the next elections”.

Several unions in Milan and the surrounding area issued a statement on Monday expressing “the maximum respect for the decisions made by the Head Of State, the highest government figure in our republic”. They added that they had “full confidence in the role of institutions that should never be delegitimised for any reason”, since this would “harm the entire country. Our nation has an urgent need for a government with full powers” that can “work effectively and with responsibility to bring key issues for social and economic development back to the centre of the agenda: employment, the young and women”. It noted that the Italian economy has experienced “fragile recovery” and that tension should be avoided to prevent families, workers, savers and investors from being harmed.

In another development, the Italian post police has started monitoring websites and social networks with the aim of reporting to the judicial authorities all the behaviours and declarations  which constitute offences against the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, that can be prosecuted ex officio. Close aides to Mattarella expressed the President’s concerns to his life, as the various threats spurred by M5s evoked in him the dark moments when his brother was assassinated by the Mafia while he held the position of President of the Regional Government of Sicily.
