Rafael Buschmann, a journalist for Der Spiegel, says the state case against Cristiano Ronaldo has only been dropped so it can be refiled in federal court. Las Vegas police confirmed to the Guardian in an email that their investigation is still open.
“The LVMPD criminal investigation involving Cristiano Ronaldo is still ongoing,” wrote a spokesperson
A lawsuit against Juventus and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo for allegedly raping a woman in Las Vegas in 2009 has been moved.
It initially appeared the case had been dropped completely after initial reports that the woman, model Katheryn Mayorga, had presented a ‘voluntary dismissal’ notice to the Nevada state court.
But her legal team have also presented a new suit at a federal court, according to new reports.
Ronaldo has always denied the allegation.
“The case is not closed,” wrote Buschmann on Twitter. “It is just at a different court now. After it was not possible for Mayorga’s lawyers to serve Ronaldo with the complaint, they filed it at a federal court.”
Ronaldo’s lawyer, Peter Christiansen, declined to comment on the case on Wednesday. Mayorga’s lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall, has also declined to comment. It is still unclear if Ronaldo was ever legally served with the state lawsuit.
