Red Scarves movement appeal for calm of Yellow Vests in France

housands of demonstrators wearing red scarves marched in Paris on Sunday calling for an end to violence and economic disruption caused by nearly three months of weekend ‘yellow vest’ anti-government protests.

Sylvain Maillard, an MP from President Emmanuel Macron’s party, La République En Marche, was among about 20 parliamentarians who joined the march, organised by the so-called “Red Scarves” movement.

“We need a return to calm,” Mr Maillard said. “The first ‘yellow vest’ protests were necessary, but the president has now made strong proposals, we are holding national debates, and the nation needs these violent demonstrations to stop.” About 10,500 people joined the ‘red scarf’ demonstration, police said.

The “yellow-vest” street protests have attracted tens of thousands of demonstrators wearing the high-visibility jackets emblematic of the grassroots movement.

A government estimate placed the number of protesters at 69,000 across France on Saturday, down from 84,000 a week earlier and from nearly a quarter of a million at the height of the movement in November.
