Reform party wins Estonia’s general election

The centre-right Reform Party has won Estonia’s general election.

The BBC reports that the Reform Party, led by former MEP Kaja Kallas, won about 29% of the vote whilst the Centre Party won 23% of the vote. Kallas is now set to become Estonia’s first female prime minister.

The Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRE), the far-right party which has called for a referendum on EU membership, came a close third.

The Reform Party will now have to enter into talks on the forming of a coalition government but Kallas insisted the EKRE were “not a choice for us”.

Nearly a quarter of Estonia’s 881,000 eligible voters cast their ballots by e-voting.
