Romania’s marriage referendum fails after low voter turnout

A referendum in Romania seeking to restrict the definition of marriage to between a man and a woman failed Sunday as voter turnout remained too low for the vote to be valid. After two days of voting, only 20.41 percent of the electorate cast a ballot — well below the 30 percent needed for the referendum to count.

The results deal a blow to the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) and hand a win to opponents who encouraged people to boycott the polls in order to invalidate the result through a low turnout.
