The Russian Foreign Ministry has published a list accusing several Western leaders of using “hate speech” against Russia, naming Italian President Sergio Mattarella for remarks comparing Moscow’s war in Ukraine to the Nazi conquests of the Third Reich.
The list, released on the Ministry’s website and first reported by la Repubblica, cites statements from leaders across 13 countries, as well as the EU and NATO. Mattarella is the only Italian official named, based on a speech he delivered at the University of Marseille on 5 February 2024.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni denounced the move as “propaganda” and an “unacceptable provocation,” reaffirming Italy’s support for Ukraine and expressing solidarity with Mattarella, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto.
The Foreign Ministry has summoned Russia’s ambassador to formally object. Tajani called the inclusion of the head of state “a provocation against the Republic and the Italian people.”
The list also targets figures such as French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, and U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.
In Rome, the Senate unanimously expressed support for President Mattarella following the Russian move.
