Salisbury Novichok poisoning : US imposes new sanctions on Russia

The Trump administration has imposed economic sanctions on Russia in response to an alleged assassination attempt on a former Russian double agent in Salisbury in the UK, as Congress pressures his administration to take a harsher stance towards Moscow, FT Reports.

The US Treasury said American banks would be prohibited from “participating in the primary market for non-rouble denominated bonds” issued by Russia and also from “lending non-rouble denominated funds to the Russian sovereign”. Treasury added that the US would continue to oppose multilateral development assistance to Russia.

Russia’s foreign ministry said it regretted the latest US move, Russia’s Ria news agency reports according to BBC.

The first set of US sanctions against Russia was imposed last August. They covered exports of sensitive electronic components and other technologies that could have military applications. Restrictions were also placed on Russian access to US financial services.
