After first saying he will represent Italy in Eurovision 2019, then getting second thoughts over it, Sanremo 2019 winner Mahmood has now officially confirmed that he will represent Italy in Tel Aviv with the song “Soldi”.
The winner of the 69th Sanremo Music Festival was given the option to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv. Mahmood won the festival by getting a lot of support from the juries.
He only placed third in the televote behind Ultimo and Il Volo, but was crowned as the winner after the jury ranked him first by giving him 63.7% of the votes in the superfinal.
In the winner’s press conference Mahmood said that he would take the opportunity to represent his country in the contest, but later said his participation in Eurovision was not yet confirmed, as they still had to figure out some things.
As part of the Big 5, Italy will automatically qualify to the final of Eurovision Song Contest. In 2019 the final will take place on May 18th.
