Sarkozy to stand trial in October on corruption charges

 

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to stand trial in October over charges of corruption, according to a decision made public by a Paris criminal court on Wednesday.

Sarkozy is accused of having tried to obtain classified information about an investigation from a former judge in early 2014 through his lawyer, Le Monde reported.

Sarkozy has been hit with a slew of corruption and illegal campaign financing allegations — all of which he rejects — since losing to François Hollande in the 2012 presidential election.

The former president also faces charges over allegations that he spent nearly €43 million on his failed reelection campaign — almost twice the spending limit.
