Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport has replaced all its 53 security scanners that check departing passengers with faster models that analyse whether travellers are carrying prohibited items in less than three seconds.
In addition, the new technology requires fewer physical searches, while still meeting the high security requirements that apply at Schiphol, the company said this week.
Schiphol earlier introduced 3D CT scanners for hand luggage checks, which means travellers do not need to take electronics, like laptops and phones, out of their bags.
The airport expects to process some 70,000 travellers per day in the May holidays, which start on Friday. That is up 10% on the same period last year.
Travellers are being advised to arrive two hours before European flights and three hours before intercontinental flight and to book a time slot for a security check in advance.
This year the most popular destinations for Dutch travellers are Spain, Britain and Italy, Schiphol said.
