Universities, schools and crèches closed in France – 70 year olds to stay home

In a televised address, French President Emanuel Macron ordered that schools, creches  and universities across France will be closed from Monday and asked people over 70 years old to stay at home.

Euronews reports him saying that he also stressed a unified response to the coronavirus, and argued against what he called a “nationalist withdrawal”.

He criticised divisions in response to the COVID-19 virus that has swept the world and urged unity in the fight against a virus that “has no borders”.

His comments came just hours after President Donald Trump announced that Europeans would be prevented from visiting the U.S., and as a number of countries closed their borders to Italy, which has seen the worst of the coronavirus outbreak in Europe so far.
