Series of earthquakes rattle south of Siena, Italy

On the evening of February 2, 2025, a series of earthquakes struck the area south of Siena, Italy, with the most significant tremor registering a magnitude of 3.1.

This initial quake occurred at 7:11 PM local time, with its epicenter located in the countryside near Isola d’Arbia, at a depth of approximately 6 kilometers. Residents in the vicinity reported feeling the tremor, accompanied by a loud rumble.

Following the initial quake, the region experienced an ongoing seismic swarm, with at least 12 additional tremors recorded. Notably, a magnitude 2.3 quake occurred at 7:17 PM near the Cassia state road in an industrial area, followed by a magnitude 2.4 tremor shortly thereafter.

The most intense activity was concentrated around the industrial zone of Isola d’Arbia, within the municipality of Monteroni d’Arbia. This area is characterized by open countryside interspersed with small residential communities.

The seismic activity persisted into the evening, with a magnitude 3.2 quake recorded at 8:29 PM. This tremor had a depth of 4 kilometers and occurred in a hilly, sparsely populated area between the towns of Isola d’Arbia, Ponte a Tressa, and Taverne d’Arbia. In total, over ten quakes were documented between Siena and Monteroni d’Arbia within a short span.

In response to the seismic events, local authorities initiated precautionary measures. The mayors of Siena, Monteroni d’Arbia, Asciano, Murlo, Sovicille, and Rapolano Terme announced the closure of schools of all levels on Monday, February 3, to conduct structural assessments of educational buildings. Additionally, both the University of Siena and the University for Foreigners in Siena suspended academic activities to facilitate necessary inspections

As of now, there have been no reports of significant damage resulting from the earthquakes. The President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, stated that verifications are ongoing in collaboration with the Civil Protection system to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
