Six people were killed in train accident on bridge linking two of Denmark’s islands.

The passenger train was heading towards the capital when it was hit by objects or tarpaulin from a freight train, according to Banedanmark, which is responsible for maintenance and traffic control of the railway network.

The accident shut the bridge linking Fyn to the island of Zealand.

A severe storm made it difficult for emergency services to reach the train which had stopped on the Great Belt fixed link between Zealand and Funen, Denmark’s two major islands.

Police outlined in a statement that they have set up an evacuation centre in Nyborg for the passengers from the train. It is located in Nyborg Sports Center, Storebæltsvej 13-14.

The police also called on everyone who has been on board the train to contact their relatives and state that they are okay.
