SLIDE SHOW: One million take part in anti Brexit march

Around one million people are estimated to have marched through London calling for the public to be given the final say on Brexit.

At the same time, a petition calling on the Government to halt the Brexit process had passed four million signatures on Saturday morning. But veteran Conservative MP John Redwood told the BBC: “We know that 16 million people wanted to stay in the EU, and some of those would still like to stay in the EU, and within that quite a few would like to have another go and have another referendum – but it was always a minority.”

Demonstrators calling for a second referendum have flooded into the British capital from across the country for the ‘Put It To The People’ march to Parliament Square on Saturday.

Around 700,000 took part in a similar rally in October, but People’s Vote – the organisers behind the march – have estimated that one million people took part in Saturday’s protest.

May is coming under pressure to quit after saying she might not put her Brexit deal to a third vote by MPs.

She wrote to all MPs on Friday saying she will ditch plans to put the deal to another so-called meaningful vote if  not enough MPs support it.

Downing Street sources have denied reports in The Times newspaper that discussions are under way about a timetable for the prime minister to step down.

The huge size of the crowd has seen people spill over into the capital’s side streets and some underground trains.

Marching bands, music, whistles, chants and cheers are providing a noisy backdrop to the march, with demonstrators wearing blue and yellow berets and flying large EU flags above the crowd as it makes its way slowly to Parliament Square.
