The event celebrates the 70th anniversary to the end of the Berlin Blockade and commemorates the Berlin Airlift, the heroic effort of the supply the city via air between 26 June 1948 and 30 September 1949.
The Berlin Blockade refers to the 11 month from 24 June 1948 to 12 May 1949 in which what was then the Soviet Union blocked the main supply routes to the three western sectors of Berlin (British, American and French), in retaliation to the new currency and constitution formed by the allies in West Germany.
As a counter measure in an attempt to avoid direct conflict with the soviets, supplies were flown to the city in an airlift in what was know as the Berlin Airlift that provided a major morale boost to a city devastated by World War II .
