Spain’s Health Ministry confirms first case of coronavirus

Spain’s Health Ministry announced late on Friday that the western European country had confirmed its first case of the Wuhan coronavirus.

In a press statement Friday, the Spanish Ministry of Health announced the country’s first coronavirus case: a German tourist at a hospital in the Canary Islands, far from the mainland. The statement notes the patient has been isolated.

The diagnosis from Spain’s National Centre for Microbiology came shortly after a plane transporting a group of 27 EU nationals from the virus’s epicentre in the Chinese city of Wuhan landed in Madrid.

None of the repatriated Spaniards exhibited symptoms of the virus, but they will be quarantined at a military hospital in Madrid and held under observation for 14 days, the health ministry said.
