Spanish Government adopts decree to extend paternity leave to 12 weeks

Italian national news agency ANSA reports that the Spanish government adopted a decree to extend paternity leave progressively over the next two years.

The measure could prove popular with voters as an early general election in Spain is scheduled in April.

Optional paternity leave will be extended from the current six weeks to eight this year, to 12 weeks the following year and to 16 weeks in 2021.

Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said the measure is part of a new law on equal opportunities that will be sent to parliament.
