During a press conference in Tartu, Estonia, Finnish President Alexander Stubb announced that Finland aims to establish a NATO ground force sub-headquarters on its territory. This move could potentially lead to Finland hosting NATO Forward Land Forces (FLF).
Currently, Finland falls under the Regional Operations Command in Brunssum, the Netherlands. However, Stubb expressed Finland’s desire to join the Norfolk group, aligning with other Nordic countries.
The announcement caused some concern in Estonia, where it was perceived as Finland shifting its focus from Estonia towards the Scandinavian nations. Stubb refuted these concerns, explaining that the decision was driven by military structures and synergies.
President Stubb also emphasized the importance of developing a common vision on critical infrastructure among neighboring countries, including defining and repairing it if necessary.
Additionally, he addressed concerns about the potential radicalization of the Russian minority in Finland, aiming to reassure the public.
President Stubb and his wife, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, began their three-day state visit to Estonia on Monday. On Tuesday, they visited a memorial dedicated to Estonians who fought for Finland during the Winter War, before arriving in Tartu, where they were warmly received by the public.
