Substantial natural gas discovery off the coast of Cyprus

The Cyprus Mail reported that Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades described the news from  ExxonMobil of a substantial natural gas discovery in an offshore field inside the island exclusive economic zone (EEZ) as putting Cyprus on the map with strong footholds.

His comments came a day after ExxonMobil announced a gas find estimated between 5-8 trillion cubic feet in an offshore field known as Glafcos.

(L-R) Cypriot Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, Permanent Secretary at the Cypriot Energy Ministry Stelios Himonas, and Tristan Aspray, ExxonMobil's Vice President of Exploration for Europe, Russia and the Caspian, announced the discovery of a natural gas field in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Preliminary analysis of the discovery could represent a natural gas resource of approximately 142 billion to 227 billion cubic meters but further analysis is required to better determine the resource potential.

The find happened at a time when the EU is considering developing a gas hub in the Mediterranean Sea to diversifying its energy source and reduce  its dependence on Russia.
