Suspect in shootings of Brown University and MIT professor found dead

The suspect in last week’s mass shooting at Brown University has been found dead in a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, ending a six-day multi-state manhunt, police said. He has been identified as Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a Portuguese national who studied at Brown around 25 years ago.

Authorities believe Valente also killed MIT professor Nuno F. Gomes Loureiro, 47, two days after the Brown attack. Both had studied at the same university in Portugal in the late 1990s. CCTV footage and witness tips linked the cases, with Valente’s car spotted near both crime scenes.

Initial findings suggest Valente died from a self-inflicted gunshot. Police found a satchel and two firearms with him, and evidence in a nearby car matched the Providence scene. Authorities have not disclosed a motive.

Brown University confirmed Valente had no current affiliation with the school, where he had studied for a PhD in physics.
